Kolobrzeg, a rapidly expanding port city on the central Polish Baltic coast, is strategically located where the Parseta River meets the Baltic Sea, at an average elevation of 8 meters above sea level. It is bordered by the Trzebiatowskie Coast and the Gryficka and Bialogardzka plains, situated approximately 150 kilometers from Szczecin. A strip of sand dunes, reaching heights of up to 10 meters, separates Kolobrzeg from the open sea. Despite the often harsh and windy climate, Kolobrzeg records the highest sunshine levels on the Polish coast.
In a project commissioned by the Maritime Authority of Szczecin (Urząd Morski w Szczecinie), Rohde Nielsen A/S undertook a comprehensive maintenance dredging and coastal protection initiative. The primary objective was to fortify the beach against winter storms from the Baltic Sea.
The project involved supplying 180,000 cubic meters of sand over a 1,100-meter stretch of beach and deepening the port’s channel and sand trap. Approximately 60% of the sand was sourced from a designated area 11 kilometers northeast of Kolobrzeg.
The operation utilized the tug boats Loke R and Vidar R, which deployed an 800-meter-long sinker line, submerged at the coastal protection site. After completing the sand pumping process, the sinker line was relocated for use in another coastal protection project in Mielno, Poland.
The project was completed on time in October 2023, with the client expressing high satisfaction with the results.
